Projects general
Nearly all the children adopted from Nepal come from Bal Mandir, the orphanage in Naxal – Kathmandu. Children, mostly girls, who are not adopted can stay in the orphanage till they are 16 years of age. After reaching 16 years they have to leave the orphanage. Since they have little formal (professional) training and/or education, it is extremely difficult for them to survive in the Nepalese society. These orphans are an easy prey for girl traffickers. If nothing is done to prevent this, these girls end (literally) in prostitution in India. Their chances of contracting HIV/AIDS is nothing less then 100%. Type the words “girl trafficking Nepal” in Google, and you will get almost 40.000 hits.
In 1997 the board of VONK (Dutch society of parents with adopted children from Nepal), decided to initiate a project for these orphaned girls. As it happened a Swedish lady had an identical plan and in 1996 she started the Nepal Girls Care Center. Rather then re-inventing the wheel, VONK, and from 2000 Foundation VONK Projects, decided to join this project.
Following this Foundation VONK Projects started a number of new projects, all aimed at the betterment of Nepalese orphans.
